The boundary between Plato's divine madness and destructive insanity is so close as to be well-nigh invisible. It is frightening to have to accept the fact that much that has passed for art that in this century has depicted distortion, meaninglessness, destructiveness. And it is interesting to note that when the art of the absurd was at its height, theologians began to announce the death of God. Religion and art both reflect what is happening to the world around us. And both must learn the difference between revelation and nightmare.
~ Madeleine L'Engle, Walking on Water: Reflections on Faith and Art
